Learn from a Master.

Michael Maloney is a nationally recognized fly casting instructor who has been fly fishing for over 65 years and actively teaching for over 55 years. He is best known as the “teacher’s teacher” because of his exceptional communication skills. Spending time helping professional fly-fishing guides and instructors on how to become better communicators, teachers and business professionals for their clients. His favorite time though, is with his beginner to advanced students.

He is the author of numerous articles on casting and is the co-author of the “Pocket Guide to Fly Casting with Michael Maloney and Gary LaFontaine”.

Michael is equally at home in fresh or salt water. He has been flying fishing in freshwater since 1956 and saltwater since 1960. While he has caught and released golden trout to small marlin on a fly rod, the greatest joy for him has been in helping people with their casting.

Michael was quoted, “What a privilege it is to help someone with something they may do and enjoy for the rest of their lives”. He was not always so relaxed. Years ago, his grandfather, a prominent international sportsman, cautioned him, after realizing his grandson was too competitive and serious about fly fishing, to just “enjoy your surroundings, and if a fish accidentally

gets on your line, well, consider it a pleasant nuisance. Better yet, go out and help someone to learn what you already know and enjoy!” He wisely took his grandfather’s advice.

What clearly sets Michael apart from most other instructors is his unusual ability to communicate with each student in their own individual way. He teaches them not only to cast, but also to recognize, analyze and help correct their own casting mistakes. He also does not take the education of failing away from his students. “Failing can be just as important as succeeding. Without it, we do not truly understand the process of problem solving and we do not understand success in itself”. He also believes humor in just the right dose is not only important but also critical to learning and processing information.

When one silicon valley executive was asked how the class was, he said, “Great! Not only did I learn how to become a better caster, but I also learned how to be a better listener and observer. Michael pushes you to think. Along the way, he also taught me to not take myself so seriously. My work at my company has even improved!”

FLIP PALLOT,  Legendary Fishing Guide, Author, Host of ESPN’s "Walker's Cay Chronicles"

“What sets Michael apart is his unique ability to reach students in ways that the rest of us never dreamed of!
Not only a teacher, but a true teacher of teachers.”

GARY LaFONTAINE, Author, Caddisflies, The Dry Fly

“Michael Maloney teaches with such incredible expertise and enthusiasm; you can’t help but learn. The bonus
is that he is such a great teacher and fly caster that you will improve your fly fishing tremendously!”

LILY RENZETTI, Sales

Manager, Renzetti Vises

“Being a woman in a male dominated industry can be difficult and intimidating at times, even though we can do anything better than men. But when it came to my casting lesson with Michael, it was a wonderful experience. His expertise in conveying information in easy to understand terms made me feel confident about my fly-casting. By the end of the lesson I felt I could cast next to Michael anywhere!”

MEL KRIEGER, Author, Essence of Flycasting, Instructor Extraordinaire

“My concept of the complete teacher is someone who genuinely cares and understands that the quintessence of
teaching is inspiration. Michael Maloney is that teacher.”

PHIL GONZALEZ, Former Owner, Bighorn River Lodge, Montana

“Michael Maloney not only practices what he preaches, he teaches what he preaches. Having Michael come up and work with my guides and myself was a rewarding experience. He is a gifted teacher and instructor. Michael left us with a giant mental volume of condensed knowledge for my guides and myself to share with our
clients. I can’t wait for the hardback copy to hit the bookshelves. Thanks Michael!”

STEVEN J. MYERS, Author, San Juan Chronicles, The Nature of FlyFishing, Colorado Guide

“Michael Maloney is such a gifted, passionate teacher; this, even more than his remarkable ability as a caster, sets him apart. His unique style romps from raucous humor to gracious humility, but always, he’s teaching. He taught me more in an evening than I have learned in a lifetime. A casting instructor myself, I left not only a far
better caster, but, a far better teacher.”

ED ENGLE, Author, The Trout Lessons, Small Fly Master, Lone Angler Journal

“My cast needed some help, so when fly casting instructor Michael Maloney said he’d take a look at it I jumped
all over the offer. I like the way Michael teaches. Although he's fluent in fly casting tech talk, his preferred
teaching style keeps everything simple. The fly line is a slave to what the rod tip does. Remember that. It's the
key to Michael's mantra. Effortless fly casting. The fly rod does the work. Casting is fun. Thanks Michael”

JIM SOLOMON, The Flyzone, MCI Instructor FFI

"Listen, communicate precisely, know your audience, be humble, keep learning and inspire your students. Sage advice from the Master Instructor Michael Maloney. Thank you Michael, you always inspire me to be a better teacher!"

DR. LINDA ROGERS, photographer, co-editor, Saltwater Flyfishing Magic and Flip Pallot’s Memories, Mangroves & Magic

“A student’s ability to learn is directly related to the teacher’s ability to communicate in a way that "makes sense” to the student. Michael is truly a master at assessing the student and establishing that line of
communication. In fact, he seems almost to bypass rational thought and teach at some more visceral level- you
simply find yourself accomplishing the movements correctly. It’s awfully easy to get very serious about this
learning, almost to the point of becoming grim, but Michael’s wonderful sense of humor will not allow that to happen. Imagine becoming a proficient fly caster and having fun at the same time.”

DR. CARL RICHARDS, Co- Author, SelectiveTrout, Fly Fishing Strategy

“Michael intuitively senses the way in which the individual student learns. This allows him to successfully
communicate complex information to readily understandable terms all the while his students are enjoying
themselves because he teaches with passion and humor.”

DR. NEAL ROGERS, photographer, co-editor, Saltwater Flyfishing Magic and Flip Pallot's Memories, Mangroves and Magic

"Michael has taken my casting from pretty good to really good over the years. He has a knack for spotting ways to improve my cast every time we work together. I always heed what he teaches and practice. He's a treasure trove of knowledge about all the equipment and techniques to get you to improve. He's serious fun to work with!!

"Only a fool refuses a free casting lesson from someone many people believe to be one of the world's great fly casting coaches...There's a difference between those who can cast well and those who can cast well and can teach others to cast well, Maloney does both...When you watch the man cast, and see how much he enjoys it, how he choreographs the line to his will, and how he makes things you've always assumed were impossible look simple, well, you just have to wonder at all you've missed."
